On 24th July 2001 ace geek guru and the President of the Free Software Foundation, Richard M. Stallman, talked to a packed audience at Model Engineering College on the Danger of Software Patents. He explained the differences between copyrights and patents and how badly software patents can hamper all technological progress and suggested a few preventive measures. With software patents, computer programming can be like walking over landmines - anyone can sue you anytime, for he's patented an idea long before, which you might be knowingly or unknowingly using. And this affects all software developers, not just Free Software developers. Big corporations are chief beneficiaries of these patents, he said.
